ROMEO OF THE NILE
I walk on the road
On the footpath
It is the dead of night
And the Moon reflects a different shade of cream.
No people.
Only cars keep passing by.
They stream away noisily
I feel the air heavy in my nose.
Take a look at my face.
There is no stupidity or sadness evident
Yet I feel stupid.
In a rut.
I take off my coat.
And kick as high as I can.
And begin to hear
The voice of a person in the midst.
I feel like crawling all
the way home today.
I will crawl all the way home.
I feel so stupid.
I feel the wind and driving rain and the
absolute bitter freezing
bloody cold
killing all of me. I begin to break.
I complete my pilgrimage.
With the Ark resting on my back.
And I bow my head down.
At the very edge of the Nile.
And a pearl watch
Of carved diamonds
Appears to tie itself.
And I look for the time.
It does not exist.
